So my town’s old fire house is for sale. It’d be so cool to remodel it into a house, with a big ass garage on the main floor. Sadly I don’t have a quarter of a million dollars or more to take on such a project. Especially for a house with no land.

That’s a pretty good price for what it is.

Oppo HQ. Wish that was in CA. I’d be all over it...then again, it’d be nowhere near that price here.

Eh around here you can get a really nice house for less than that. for example the house my wife actually wants to buy, but we con’t really afford right now.

I’d certainly hope so. Not as cool as my home town’s fire house though, it had a boat garage in the basement on the river, for the fire boat.

Well, I guess it’s regional. I used to think NC was cheap, but I was just comparing to the Northeast. I’m also a city guy.

Wait why do you need land? It’s adjacent to a park. That’s like a yard that some other sucker needs to mow. Just get some planters if you want flowers. If you’re concerned about possible additions, it probably would be a huge loss to scrap adjacent garage. I’d be tempted to keep that though and convert the bays in the main building to living space (or maybe even retail if the location is good). The shed is only two bays, but since it’s for firetrucks, it can presumably fit at least four cars (they’ve got three truck in it in the picture, but it must be a bitch to get the middle one out), which is plenty for me (though I’d be tempted to also buy an old firetruck as well).

Land= racetrack

This is my”rally car” at my father in law’s but I’d like to have my own land so I don’t have to bother him.

I’m a small town guy through and through biggest town I’ve lived in was about 9000, to me 100,000 is a lot for a basic house, and more than 600/month is too much for rent. I’m paying 450, everything included for a 800 sq/ft apartment with a “two car” garage.

Ah, yes with lots of land you could do that.

It does have a dedicated grilling porch though.

I’ve always wanted to own an old fire station like this. The main garage would be the “clean” shop, and the detached garage would be the “dirty” shop.

It’s funny how this all works. I think the 18,000 people + 17,000 student college students is a small town. It is compared to where I grew up, in Raleigh, but to you its a pretty big town.

This summer I’ll be paying $320 (split of $640 a month with a roommate) a month for a 2 bedroom apartment with outdoor parking.

Back in Raleigh a small house in a nice area is about a million. Once you get outside the city things go down but your still spending half a million to be 25 miles from the city.

Late to the party...

That place has a bigger yard than my house.

I’d strongly consider that (if I could get her interested). The biggest question I get when I tell my gf I want to buy a car is, “Where are we going to put it?” No more questions here...plus there’s height for a lift.

Yeah, small town rural life is different, but you also have to consider that where I live it’s hard to make more than 35,000/year, and most people are at more like 20,000 or less. Right now I’m work as much as I can, one part time job and any side jobs I can find, and still making 16,000 a year. Thankfully my wife is making closer to 40,000, but since we have no kids, and almost no debt we’re actually doing pretty well. I’m hoping that by next fall I’ll have worked my way into a fuel/propane delivery trunk position for my company, and be making 35,000/year. Than I’ll finally have the cash to do things like buy a house, and make some automotive dreams come true.
